Why did I start a healthy food blog?
Being a mom of two teen-aged daughters in an image-focussed world challenges me daily. My goal is to help them as well as other young girls, teenagers, and parents to look outside the superficial and false ideal that skinny equals healthy. Instead let’s strive for feeling good on the inside by eating well and taking care of ourselves.
An important step is creating delicious, nutritious foods for the soul.
In addition to being a mom and the CEO of the house, I am a health coach for Kurbo Health. I coach kids, teens and families on making better food choices and planning out healthy activities and exercise.
Working with busy families I see that most adults have figured out how to manage their own health and weight. As parents however, many of us are unsure about how to best feed our families. Five o’clock rolls around and we scramble to put something on the table. Often in an effort to get through the day we offer meals loaded with high fat, sugar and sodium.
Since discovering Kurbo a few years ago, our family lives a Kurbo-inspired lifestyle. The key thing to know is that Kurbo is NOT A DIET. One of the things I love about Kurbo is that no food categories are excluded… you do not need to feel restricted doing Kurbo. It is about learning to make the best choices, given the choices available to you. Habits are formed that will last a life time. The changes are sustainable – that is something I can stand behind.
Preparing fresh, well balanced meals at home using whole, unprocessed foods is the best way to nourish our families and teach our kids how to care for themselves.
Cooking can be fun and easy!
If I can do it so can you!
Little by little I taught myself how to prepare easy, low-fat and low-sugar meals for the family. I am no chef but I’m learning as I go and enjoying the art of cooking. Food presentation and photography have been a new creative outlet that I have been loving. Sharing aesthetically pleasing food creations with friends and family is a fun bonus.
I see our girls watching me and learning. They are starting to prepare healthy foods for themselves – that keeps me going! Our older daughter, Ley took up an opportunity for a summer internship at Kurbo Health, helping to post content and learning more and more about how to take care of herself. I am starting to hear about friends far and near trying my recipes from OvenHug – that really makes my day!!
I enjoy the challenge of taking a favorite old recipe, like mac ‘n cheese, and lightening it up. We play with spices to come up with savory seasoned dishes that even our picky eater gobbles up!
Things to Know about Me:
I have an Iranian heritage – I was born in Iran (for delicious, low fat versions of our favorite Persian dishes click Here). We emigrated to the U.S. when I was a toddler and I was raised in Indiana (4 years) and Michigan (about 12 years). I went to college in Wisconsin so I have a little cheesehead in me too. I have been living in California for the last 26 years. I can’t think of any place else I’d rather be!
I bring my diverse background to the kitchen. Living in California we have grown to absolutely love Mexican food (I still love cheese!). Mexican food is my go-to when I want everyone to clear their plates – you will find plenty of lightened up, Bita-version Mexican food recipes on OvenHug.
What I like to do for fun!
I love to dance! I discovered Zumba a few years ago and ever since I haven’t looked back. What I love about dancing is that the hour flies by and I don’t even realize I’m exercising because it’s that much fun. Shaking and grooving to great music with good people is the absolute best way to start the day.
I also enjoy reading and getting together with my eccentric book club. We try to gather once a month. The conversations almost always steer into a direction that no one could possibly predict and that’s part of what I love about this group and these gals.
We have 4 furry pets – 2 cats and 2 dogs. I consider my fuzzy friends to also be my children and love them dearly. If you are local you will catch me coddling and carpooling with my little buddy.
I’m pretty simple when it comes down to it. I like to have fun and show my quirky side. I get the nitty gritty tedious parts of my day done first so I can get out and dance, see friends, and experiment in the kitchen as much as possible. I love the beach, I have a thing for sunsets, and I’m starting to like wearing hats.
Did I mention I’m a hugger? Hope you can feel the love and the big squeeze I’m sending you right now!
