Taking a break from food to share a fun clay craft. This post is about how to make ornaments emulating emoji faces. Ornaments can be used for a Christmas tree, as gift toppers, and as charms or key chains. Mainly they are super fun to make. We made them several years ago and we still get a kick out of unwrapping the ornament box where we have them stored seasonally.
Reasons to Make Emoji Ornaments with Oven Bake Clay
- an easy no mess craft
- brings smiles every year
- calorie-free baking
- so fun!
What surprises me is how emojis don’t go out of fashion. The big yellow face shapes expressing silly, funny, sad, surprised, and hysterical emotions are still used in daily communications. In a few more years these cute symbols may become obsolete, replaced by talking, animated, high-tech versions. For now, we will keep making our simply funny faces.
The first couple of years after we made emoji ornaments we dedicated a separate tree to showcase them. It was a small, shiny white artificial tree. These days we incorporate emojis and mix them right into our main tree.
Can you find the photo ornament in the upper left-hand corner? Ava was about 4 years old, wearing a swim cap, with a face painted like a Dalmatian, half washed off from swimming. Now that’s classic!
Call me simple but emojis crack me up! I instantly smile when I see one.
Emojis appeal to all ages. In our family the grandmas down to the grandkids use them.
One of my 8-year-old twin nieces chose to have an emoji-themed birthday party this year proving that emojis are still in style.
Alas, finally the instructions to make Oven Baked Sculpey Polymer Clay Emoji Ornaments!
Emoji Ornaments!
A fun clay craft to make ornaments emulating emoji faces. Ornaments can be used for a Christmas tree, as gift toppers, and as charms or key chains. Mainly they are super fun to make.
Ingredients
- Circular Cookie Cutter (mine was 3 inches around
- 1 Lb block of yellow Craft Smart Polymer Clay/Sculpey Oven-bake Clay - 1 block yields about 12 emoji ornaments
- Craft Smart Paint Pens in White, Black, Light Blue, Red and Pink (medium tip)
- Egg beater (use the top to punch a hole in the ornament)
Instructions
- Pre-heat oven to 275 Degree F
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper
- Get your yellow clay and roll it to about 1/4 in thick
- With your cookie cutter press out a circle and with the top of a egg beater punch a whole so you can hang the ornament
- Place the circles on the lined cooked sheet and bake according to instructions (about 20 minutes)
- Once they are cooled, draw the faces in pencil. Then go back over with the paint markers. You may need to go over a few of the colors more than once
- Cut a piece of twine (I used bakers string), feed through top hole and tie the ends together
You can find Sculpey (oven bake polymer clay) from a local craft store like Michaels or order some online. Paint pens can easily be found in a crafting store like Michaels.
I’m looking forward to crafting ornaments with Ava. Leyla will be home in about a week. We’ll set a few aside for her to design. I can think of at least 5 faces of emojis I use that I will be turning into emoji ornaments this year.
Are you going to bake a batch of these calorie-free goodies? Which emojis are your go-to’s? If I have enough clay I’m going to make a few mini emoji ornaments with the ‘yum’ face and attach them to cookies and goodies to share. Not only do Oven Bake Clay Emoji Ornaments make adorable, silly ornaments, but they are also great as gift toppers, charms, and key chains. The possibilities are endless!
Have fun friends,
bob
