Marbleized Easter Eggs

Published: March 28, 2021 Last Modified: March 30, 2021

Water Marbleized Easter Eggs are fun and easy.  The supplies you need include things you probably have in the house including a variety of nail polish colors.  These fun swirly eggs are perfect for the Persian new year, the haftseen table, and for Easter baskets.

  • variety of nail polish colors

For this project, we use hard-boiled eggs.  My favorite way to prepare hard-boiled eggs is in the Instant pot.  Click over to our post on How to Boiled Eggs in an Instant Pot.

I recommend having both light and dark colors of nail polish for fun swirly designs.  It’s also fun to have blues or black for moody contrast.

The process is not hard but is best described in video format.  Watch this video for a visual of how to do water marbling on eggs.

To visualize what we’re going for, imagine a light spread of colors on the surface of water, expanding and spreading to the edges.

Marbleized Easter Eggs Process steps:

  • Drop one or two drops of nail polish in the center of a cup of room temperature water.
  • Wear gloves to keep your hands clean
  • Use a toothpick to drag the polish to the edges/rim of the cup or container
  • Use the toothpick to then drag the colors across the diameter of the cup in a zig zag pattern
  • Dip egg carefully into the center of the water with the polish design, grabbing the colors
  • Carefully remove the egg and place it in an empty egg carton to dry

The girls and I have been making these pretty eggs for years.  We get to start spring festivities early with setting up the Haftseen table for the Persian New Year, also known as Norooz.

We’ve learned a few things over the years…Although it’s great to use up leftover nail polish in this project, old nail polish does not work well.  It dries too quickly in the water.  Gel or quick setting nail polishes also don’t give good results.  The drop of polish goes straight down to the bottom of the cup without spreading out on the surface of the water.   Ideally, we want fresh polishes that spread easily.  I like to carefully unscrew and open tops of all the polishes I’ll be using so I can work quickly, adding drops before the polish dries.  This helps to be able to spread the colors around to make beautiful designs.
